Orchard Park, New York · Opened for the 2026 season

THE TECH INSIDE THE NEW HIGHMARK

The Buffalo Bills just moved into a $2.2 billion stadium built to fight lake-effect snow. Sony isn't on the naming rights or the founding-partner wall. It's in the cameras that feed the video boards, the 8K rigs that measure every first down, and the headset on the head coach. This is a fan-made explainer of where Sony actually shows up, in Orchard Park and across the league.

Three ways Sony is on the field at the new Highmark

Sony's involvement isn't a stadium sponsorship. It's infrastructure: gear the Bills bought for their own broadcast operation, plus league-mandated systems every NFL venue runs.

01

The cameras

The Bills' new in-house production runs 35 cameras. Twelve are Sony: six HDC-3500 system cameras, two high-frame-rate HDC-5000s, three wireless PXW-Z750s and a cinema-line FX6 on a gimbal. That's what feeds the video boards and the halftime show.

02

Hawk-Eye officiating

Sony owns Hawk-Eye Innovations. Every NFL stadium, Highmark included, carries six 8K cameras that virtually measure the line to gain, twelve boundary-line cameras, and the SMART replay system officials use in New York.

The coach's headset

Since 2025, every NFL sideline runs a Sony-built headset with 1000X-series noise cancelling and a custom mic. 2,300+ were deployed across 32 teams last season with zero hardware failures reported by Sony.

FLAG ON THE PLAY
Sony is not a founding partner of the new Highmark Stadium. Those deals went to Ticketmaster (the first), Verizon (official 5G network), Seneca Resorts & Casinos and others, with Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield holding naming rights. Sony's presence is through the Bills' production equipment and the NFL's league-wide technology partnership signed in August 2024.

The building

Open-air by choice, heated by necessity. The new Highmark sits across the street from the old one and cost more than the original plan.

0 Seats. Smallest bowl in the NFL, by design.
$0B Final cost. The 2022 plan said $1.4B.
0% Of seats under the canopy. The field stays open to the sky.
0 Acres. 1.6 million square feet of building.

Built for Buffalo weather

  • Largest stadium snow-melt system in the world under the seating and plazas, with heated concourses and radiant heaters over sections of seats.
  • Natural Kentucky bluegrass field. The original sod was swapped before the second home date after weak root growth.
  • 360-degree concourse with sightlines to the field, so nobody misses a snap on the way back from the line.
  • Three stainless-steel bison outside. The biggest is 22 feet tall and weighs 23,000 pounds.
  • Replaces the old Highmark (born Rich Stadium, 1973) after 53 seasons and 71,608 seats.

Who paid

New York State$600M
Buffalo Bills$350M
Erie County$250M
NFL (G-4 program)$200M
Original commitment$1.4B

Cost overruns beyond the original agreement are the team's responsibility. The state also committed $280M over 30 years for upkeep plus $6M a year in capital improvements.

The control room

The Bills built an IP-based production plant that a regional sports network would envy. Sony's cameras are the glass on the front of it.

Why a separate tech center? The racks, fiber and processing live in a building outside the bowl, linked to the control room by KVM. Crews got in there in October 2025, months before the stadium itself was done, which is how a from-scratch production plant was ready for an August preseason game.

Sony × NFL, league-wide

The stadium story sits inside a bigger one. Sony has been quietly rewiring how the NFL is officiated, photographed and broadcast since 2020.

The chain gang got benched

Since the 2025 season, the NFL's primary first-down measurement is optical. Six Hawk-Eye 8K cameras per stadium track the ball. Operators at the league's Art McNally GameDay Central in New York confirm the spot, the on-field crew gets the call, and a virtual recreation goes to the boards and the broadcast.

  • ~30 seconds per measurement, up to 40 seconds faster than chains.
  • Installed in all 30 NFL stadiums plus international venues: São Paulo, London, Berlin, Madrid, Dublin.
  • Chain crews stay on the sideline as a backup.
  • Bills–Jaguars, Jan 11, 2026: Sony's season recap points to two decisive measurements in the Wild Card game, 2 inches and 4 inches. Buffalo won 27–24.

Built in the same lab as the WH-1000X

Sony designed the coach's headset with the league and debuted it in 2025 on every sideline, replacing the previous supplier's gear. The noise cancelling comes from the 1000X consumer line, retuned for a stadium instead of an airplane.

  • Tested against real crowd noise above 100 decibels.
  • Custom microphone built to isolate one voice: the coach's.
  • Drop-tested and rated for rain, sleet, snow, heat and cold. Useful in Orchard Park.
  • Connects through a belt pack on Verizon Business' managed private wireless network.
  • 2,300+ deployed across 32 teams in 2025, 1,100+ hours of gameday comms, zero hardware failures per Sony.

The cartoon broadcast is a Sony product

Beyond Sports, a Sony company, turns live tracking data into a fully animated game in real time. The NFL's Next Gen Stats feed player positions, Hawk-Eye optical tracking fills in the skeletons, and the announcers call it from VR headsets as animated versions of themselves using Sony's Virtual Commentator tech. Three editions so far, and ESPN has expanded the deal to the NHL, NBA and WNBA for 2025–26.
